Methacrylate

SmartAdhesives' Methacrylate Adhesives (also called acrylic adhesives) are incredibly strong and easy to use. Formulated for bonding plastic and metal substrates, our methacrylate adhesives adhere through surface oil and grease. That means you get a strong bond with less surface preparation required. (Of course, we still recommend surface prep, where possible.)

Methacrylate adhesives make impact-resistant, structural bonds on metal, plastic, composites, and wood. Composed of two liquid components that require mixing before application (1:1 ratio), SmartAdhesives methacrylates cure quickly, provide high peel and shear strength, handle temperatures ranging from -40F to 350F, and are chemical resistant. Our methacrylate adhesives come in convenient cartridges with a mixing nozzle for easy storage, use, and disposal.

Things to know about methacrylate adhesives

Methacrylate adhesives are toughened structural adhesives designed to bond plastics, metals, composites, and dissimilar substrates. They can cut through oil and grease to bond, so surface prep is less necessary for these adhesives.

How They Work

Once the methacrylate curing agent and resin are mixed, they chemically react to form chemical chains that bind with each other and certain surfaces, particularly plastics and metals. Unlike epoxies, thorough mixing is not as crucial for methacrylate adhesives, and once the chemical reaction initiates, the rate of reaction increases to provide more rapid strength build-up.

Tips

Before they cure, methacrylate adhesives emit a strong sulfur odor, so we recommend good ventilation during application. The resin and curing agent are also flammable, so keep cartridges away from heat, sparks, and open flames.

Did You Know?

Because of the exotic plastics now used in outdoor and illuminated signs, methacrylate adhesives are replacing rivets and welding in most sign frames.
